Based on past and present research activities on the non-volant small mammals, a total of 68 species from 16 families of 8 orders have been recorded at Krau Wildlife Reserve (KWR). This represents 63.5% of 107 species of small mammals recorded in Peninsular Malaysia. Species representation of 5 orders were fully (100%) represented at KWR, namely Dermoptera (Gulogo –1 sp), Scondentia (Tree-shrews -3 spp), Primate (monkeys & gibbons -7 spp), Pholidota (anteater -1 sp) and Artiodactyla (mouse deer - 2 spp). The remaining 3 orders, Carnivora had the highest representation of 70.8% of 24 species, followed by Rodentia with 69.1 % of 55 species and insectivora had the least representation with 33.3%. The high representation of small carnivores at KWR indicates the diverse habitats of the forest ecosystem where high diversity of prey species is readily available for sustenance. The 68 species of non-volant small mammals reported at KWR through the various surveys carried out over a period of 40 years, is not an indication that the carrying capacity of KWR is limited to the said 68 species. They were collected from small areas at Kuala Lompat, Bukit Rengit, Perlok and Gunung Benom. It is believed that should a systematic approach be undertaken to sample other areas of KWR, it is highly probable that rare species will be documented.
