The “Green Deal” of the European Union (EU) and also the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is aimed at farming that is friendlier to the environment and human health in the fields, which means the use of chemical plant protection products (PPP) reduction. The negative trend observed so far is also that of many working people exclusion of substances from the list of active substances in the EU — continues, having an impact on the number and assortment of PPP available on the market. PPP price growth has also been on an upward curve in recent years. Alternative plant protection methods are discussed in the article: 1. Physical — mechanical methods. 2. Agrotechnical (preventive) methods. 3. Biological methods. 4. Application of a physical barrier. An insight into plant protection products is also given. The State Plant Protection Service (hereinafter — SPPS) publishes on its website a list of PPP registered in Latvia, all active substances of which are allowed to be used in organic agriculture. There are currently 93 PPP in this list. Of these, 67 PPP containing living organisms, six insecticides/acaricides, incl. one microbiological and two viral preparations, four repellents, twelve fungicides, incl. nine microbiological and one viral preparation, four limacides.
