QTL [Quantitative Trait Loci] mapping for agronomic, yield, and iron zinc biofortification traits using IR95040 x JAMIR RILs population
2018
Descalsota, G.I.L.
Iron (Fe) and Zinc (Zn) deficiencies are among the most prevalent micronutrient deficiencies worldwide primarily affecting children, pregnant and lactating women in developing countries. Rice provides energy and nutrition to more than half of the world population but but is a poor source of micronutrients. Rice biofortification is one of the most sustainable approaches to tackle micronutrient malnutrition with increased grain Zn concentration as primary trait and increased grain. For concentration as secondary trait. Authors conducted QTL mapping using 295 IR95040 x JAMIR recombinant inbred line (RILs) phenotyped for ten agronomic, yield, and Fe and Zn biofortification traits during 2017DS and 2017WS. Ten high-Zn RILs with acceptable yield potential were identified. Authors detected QTLs and three QTLs were identified for Fe and Zn, respectively. One large-effect QTL for Zn on chromosome 5 was consistent across seasons. Further, authors identified OsZIP5 and OsZIP9 as candidate genes for Zn in chromosome 5 and OSNAS3 for grain Fe and Zn on chromosome 7. These new QTLs and candidate genes help to further elucidate the genetic basis for grain Fe and Zn concentration, and may prove useful for future marker-assisted breeding for these important traits.
