Comparación de la Eficacia del Extracto Citronella (Cymbopogon citratus) Como Repelente Natural en Base Oleosa y un Repelente Comercial en Base Etanolica Contra Mosquitos Adultos de la Especie Aedes aegypti | Comparison of the Efficacy of Citronella Extract (Cymbopogon citratus) as a Natural Repellent on an Oily Base and a Commercial Repellent on an Ethanol Base against Adult Mosquitoes of the Aedes aegypti Species

Esta investigación tuvo como finalidad determinar la eficacia del efecto repelente del extracto de la planta Citronella (Cymbopogon citratus) en base oleosa sobre los mosquitos de la especie Aedes aegypti, especie transmisora de enfermedades relevantes en salud pública como la fiebre amarilla, el dengue, el chikungunya entre otras. Con el fin de determinar la eficacia en la repelencia del extracto de Cymbopogon citratus en base oleosa como repelente; se realizaron bioensayos con voluntarios humanos, los cuales firmaron un consentimiento para la realización del ensayo, donde se estableció la concentración efectiva y tiempo de protección. Para lograrla, se desarrollaron pruebas del extracto oleoso de Citronella en concentraciones del 10%, 20%, 30% y 40% comparando la efectividad de este con la efectividad y el tiempo de duración de un repelente comercial en base etanólica. Los voluntarios fueron expuestos a hembras del mosquito en estudio A. aegypti las cuales estuvieron en jaulas entomológicas de malla mosquitera lo que permitió verificar el efecto repelente. Todo el procedimiento fue adecuado a los lineamientos para la eficacia y pruebas de repelentes de mosquitos en piel humana definidos por la OMS (Organización mundial de la salud, 2009). Con lo anterior se determinó que el extracto de la planta Citronella (Cymbopogon citratus) en base oleosa demostró tener una mejor efectividad con la concentración de 40% teniendo un tiempo de protección máxima de 1 hora y 30 minutos (90 minutos) lo que demostró que al ser en base oleosa retuvo la fragancia que es muy característica de esta planta y que es, en teoría, lo que repele a los mosquitos. Y de igual forma se puede observar que el extracto en base oleosa de esta planta puede servir como un repelente comercial sin generar riesgos en la salud de las personas ya que al compararlo con el repelente comercial en base etanolica demostró que el tiempo de duración de este también fue de 1 hora y 30 minutos, tiempo que no pico y/o aterrizo mosquitos de la especie en estudio.
