[Excess deaths among California's minority populations]
1986
Abstract: A technical report for health professionals and health and disease statisticians presents summary findings on the degree of excess mortality among California's minority populations during the period of 1979-81. The data indicate that 50% of the deaths of Blacks under 45 years of age and 41.6% under 70 years of age were excess, while the comparable rates found for Spanish-surname excess deaths for these 2 age groups were 14% and 11.2%, respectively. Data on the third minority group studied, Asian/Pacific Islanders, indicated no excess mortality for either age group. For the Black and Spanish-surname minority populations, the major cause of excess mortality was due to homicide, with the number 2 cause being heart disease for Blacks (both sexes) and cirrhosis and cerebrovascular disease for Spanish-surname people.
