Abstract: It has been established that long-term malnutrition leads to poor brain growth and that this damage is permanent when it occurs during the especially vulnerable period of early childhood. The critical factors related to nutrition seem to be age of onset and duration of malnutrition, type and degree, and age when rehabilitation occurs. New data indicate the first years of life may overcome this syndrome if other conditions are optimal; however, the difficulty of controlling all conditions requires a warning against over-optimism.
