Abstract: Various aspects of diabetes management are discussed in this easy-to understand workbook for young diabetics. General background information is provided about the causes and diagnosis of diabetes, the relationship between blood sugar and urine sugar levels, and the function of the pancreas and kidneys in normal glucose metabolism. Major topics include 1) types of insulin, administering insulin injections, and the importance of accurate record-keeping, 2) regulation of insulin dose in response to urine sugar levels and the effects of diet and exercise on insulin requirements, 3) management of hypoglycemia and Ketosis and, 4) measurement, control, and goals of blood and urine sugar levels. The measurement and interpretion of hemoglobin A, values, the importance of exercise to the diabetic, and possible health consequences associated with diabetes are explained. Future research on topics such as the insulin pump, artificial pancreas, and pancreas transplants is highlighted briefly. A variety of colorful charts, tables, and illustrations are used to present information; discussion questions and problems, and quizzes accompany each section of the text. A listing is included of local diabetes organizations and camps.
