Report of the World Food Programme, Government of the Netherlands Seminar on Food Aid
1983-1984
Abstract: Sixteen technical papers by authors from 13 countries are presented in the proceedings of a 3-day seminar on the current status of food aid programs, held in The Hague in October 1983. The papers are equally distributed over 4 general themes: human development through food aid; the developmental impact and effectiveness of food aid; human needs and the right to food; and contributions of food aid to equitable growth. Thirty-one conclusions reached by the seminar participants are summarized, including the findings that: (1) there currently is a strong case for increasing food, especially for developing nations; (2) food aid remains as a major form of assistance for the poor; (3) the poorest suffer the most from malnutrition and death in famine emergencies; (4) larger resources should be devoted to improving the condition of women; and (5) nutrition programs need to recognize that the weaker members of families are adversely affected by food distribution. Commentaries are also included by representatives of the World Food Programme, the Food and Agriculture Organization, and the United Nations. (wz)
