Heimbach, James T. | Stokes, Raymond C.
Abstract: A survey by the Food and Drug Administraion (FDA) to determine what nutrition information should be included on food labels to make them most useful to consumers to assist them in improving their nutritional status is reported. Questionnaires were sent to 1747 members of the American Institute of Nutrition, 987 persons from the food industry, and 900 consumers from an FDA mialing list. Respondents (60%) to questionnaires identified obesity and heart disease as the major diet-related national healt h problems; they chose information about calories, sodium, fat, protein, iron, calcium, and carbohydrates as most useful to the public. Respondents also indicated that the present U.S. recommended daily allowance system should be continued for vitamins and minerals. It was concluded that label information must be carefully selected to avoid overwhelming consumers with more information than they want or need, and the information which is presented must be given in the clearest and simplest manner possible. References are included.
