Abstract: A guide for people who feed the handicapped enumerates the problems and challenges the handicapped face at feeding time. The first of 3 sections concentrates on body position, the role of muscle tone in eating skills, and food presentation and the feeding environment. The next section explains mouth structure and funtion, including identification of parts of the mouth that must be functioning in order to be able to eat, and how to handle potential mealtime problems such as choking. The final section discusses feeding techniques, and mealtime experiences that can motivate individuals, and affect behavior. Three appendices include a number of checklists and guides, plus competency tests for body position and mouth structure. A number of procedures are illustrated by line drawings. (kbc).
