Abstract: Current knowledge concerning the relationship of nutrition and cancer is presented in view of recent evidencesupporting an association between diet and cancer etiology, treatment, and prevention. Epidemiological studies correlating patterns of cancer incidence with nutrition are reviewed. Mechanisms of carcinogenesis and mutagenesis whichimplicate food stuffs and specific dietary substances as causes of cancer are described. Factors with possible cancerassociation include fat, fiber, vitamins, minerals, trace elements, artificial sweeteners, food additives, and alcohol. Methods of nutritional assessment and treatment of the cancer patient are addressed. Specific topics include: nutritional problems associated with chemical and radiation therapy; anorexia and cachexia in malignant disease; enteraland parenteral hyperalimentation; and daily nutritional care of the cancer patient.
