Evaluation and treatment of obesity
1984
Abstract: Six authoritative articles cover the fields of medicine, nutrition, exercise physiology, and psychiatry in the evaluation and management of obesity, (representing 1 of a series of 5 texts on obesity), emphasizing the principles of obesity evaluation and treatment. Two central issues are addressed: why does obesity treatment present a problem to the health practitioner; and how do we begin to define and classify the nature of obesity in individuals. The overview topics focus on the scope of the problem in treating the obese; complex mechanisms that influence energy balance and body weight; health risks associated with obesity; and methods for assessing obese subjects from 3 perspectives - health status, degree of obesity, and psychological influence. Both theoretical and practical aspects are emphasized. (wz).
