Paraprofessional training manual
1984
Abstract: A series of training modules on each group of individuals served by the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) has been developed and incorporated into a paraprofessional training manual by the Maternal and Child Health Branch of the California Department of Health Services. The manual is designed to help nutritionists select materials, plan and conduct training sessions for WIC paraprofessionals responsible for performing nutrition assessments and nutrition education activities. Each training module contains an introduction table of contents, and several content sections. Content sections review a specific topic using an expanded outline format to highlight important points. Each section includes a summary, behavioral objectives, key terms and definitions, teaching/learning aids, and evaluation tools. Teaching/learning aids include audiovisuals, readings, pamphlets, and additional sources of relevant information. The training module on infants addresses the following topics: 1) infant development - development of feeding skills, 2) nutrition for the newborn - formula preparation, feeding schedules, storage of breast milk and formula, gastrointestinal problems, 3) sequence of solid food introduction, home prepared and commercial baby foods, feeding practices, 4) feeding the older infant - self-feeding skills development, weaning, dental health, overweight infants, iron needs, and 5) infant assessment - nutritional, medical, and physical risk factors and anthropometric, biochemical, and dietary assessment training modules can be used for self-instruction or as preparation materials for in-service training sessions.
