The Great American fish scandal
1986
Heiman, Diane | Jones, Margaret
Abstract: A wide range of health hazards associated with fish and shellfish consumption, and recommendations for designing and implementing a mandatory federal inspection program for fish and shellfish are presented in this report from Public Voice for Food and Health Policy. Major categories of health hazards that are examined include 1) microbiological and parasitic contaminants (bacteria, viruses, toxins and parasites) and 2) environmental contaminants (chemical residues, metals, pesticides). Currently federal inspection of fish products is the responsibility of the National Marine Fisheries Service of the Department of Commerce and the Food and Drug Administration, with input from the Environmental Protection Agency and state agencies. The history, scope, limitations, and inadequacies of the present inspection system are identified.
