In the past decade, ocular thelaziosis caused by the nematode Thelazia callipaeda has been demonstrated to be widespread among dogs from different regions in Italy, in Switzerland and more recently in southwestern France. In 2008, an epidemiological investigation in 16 French departments demonstrated that ocular thelaziosis had already been observed in 22 veterinary practices. The presence of worms was reported on the eyes of 117 animals. Most of the cases were reported in three cantons of Dordogne and the presence of strawberry farms was clearly identified as a risk factor for the infection of dogs.
