A blight of Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis)
1969
Rush, M.C. | Boyle, A.M.
A survey was made of fungi associated with blighted Aleppo pine, Pinus halepensis and into some conditions favoring blight development. Representatives of 16 genera of fungi isolated from foliage, branches and roots of blighted trees were screened for pathogenicity to P. halepensis in greenhouse and laboratory experiments. These fungi did not cause blight symptoms on inoculated plants, but some quickly colonized pine tissues dying or dead from other causes. The symptoms of the blight are described and the probable cause suggested to be excessive transpiration coupled with low soil moisture or poor development of the root systems of blighted trees due to underlying hard pan.
