Protein-calorie malnutrition in a community hospital
1980
Willard, Mervyn D. | Gilsdorf, Robert B. | Price, Robert A.
Protein-calorie status was assessed for 200 adult nonobstetric admissions to a private hospital by means of anthropometric measurements, serum albumin, and total lymphocyte count. Nonnutritive factors such as hepatic failure were considered. Over 31% were found to be malnourished, mostly associated with the conditions of hypoxic cardiopulmonary disease, gastrointestinal disorders, arthritis or muscular impairment, organic brain syndrome or fever. Chronic inanition was more common than acute protein depletion and was frequently present at admission.
