Impact of surge irrigation on furrow water advance
1996
Yonts, C.D. | Eisenhauer, D.E. | Fekersillassie, D.
Surge irrigation was compared to continuous flow irrigation in Nebraska from 1983 to 1990. Surge irrigation reduced advance inflow times an average of 20% compared to continuous irrigation. Furrow packing and surge irrigation both individually and combined were evaluated in 1989 and 1990. Continuous irrigation in packed furrows provided similar advance time reductions as surge irrigation in soft (unpacked) furrows. When surge irrigation was used in combination with furrow packing, advance inflow times were reduced an additional nine percentage points compared to either continuous irrigation in packed furrows or surge irrigation. An equation was developed that can be used to determine surge on-times during the advance phase given the on-time required for the first cycle. The range of application was evaluated using computer simulation.
