Temperature management of tropical and subtropical fruits in Japan
2013
Akinaga, T.
Mandarin orange, apple and Japanese pears are major domestic fruits in Japan and banana is the major imported fruit. Specific tropical and subtropical fruits are bananas and pineapples. Other tropical and subtropical fruits have been handled only as exotic fruits. The average storage temperature of refrigerated showcases for fruits are 5 or 10°C at retail stores in Okinawa. The average temperature of cold storage at stores is 10°C. These temperatures produce chilling injury symptoms to tropical and subtropical fruits in showcases or in cold stores. To prevent chilling injury of tropical and subtropical fruits in Japan, the importer should provide information about the requirements for ripening and the most suitable storage temperatures.
