The present research work has been performed with forty rice (Oryza sativa L.) genotypes to determine the nature of genetic variability for yield and yield attributing traits. The experiment was conducted in RBD with three replications during Kharif, 2009 for eleven quantitative traits. Analysis of variance was highly significant for all the characters studied, indicating ample scope of selection. Mean performance indicated that the maximum genotypes were late in maturity with medium harvest index. Phenotypic coefficients of variation (PCV) were slightly higher than the corresponding genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) for all traits studied. High estimates of GCV and PCV were recorded for biological yield/plant followed by grain yield per plant, number of spikelets per panicle and number of fertile tillers per plant. High estimates of heritability coupled with high genetic advance as per cent of mean were recorded for biological yield per plant followed by grain yield per plant, number of spikelets per panicle, number of fertile tillers per plant, harvest index, plant height and days to initial flowering. The study revealed that greater emphasis should be given to these characters for yield improvement in rice.
