Comparison of some indices of copper deficiency in growing rats
1985
Klevay, L.M. | Milne, D.B. | Wallwork, J.C.
Young male rats were fed on a diet low in copper for 82 days; deficiency was verified by several criteria. The largest effects of deficiency were the increases in liver iron and heart dopamine and the decrease in liver Cu. Increases in plasma cholesterol and cardiac weight and the decrease in cardiac norepinephrine were smaller than the former, but were greater than the decrease in growth. Achromotrichia, abnormal electrocardiograms and ventricular aneurysms were found, but anaemia was absent. Impairment in function in Cu deficiency is not uniform. Several anatomical, chemical and physiological characteristics can be more sensitive indices of Cu deficiency than anaemia.
