Fluoride in infant formulas and fluoride supplementation
1981
Barness, Lewis A.
In order to help pediatricians evaluate whether fluoride supplements are to be prescribed for their formula-fed patients, current recommendations have been revised to reflect the present manufacture of commercial infant formulas without fluoridated water. Thus, recommended dosages for fluoride in formula-fed infants depend on whether the formula is diluted with fluoridated or non-fluoridated water at home. All formulas (ready-to-feed, concentrated or powdered) now contain similar low fluoride levels; supplemental fluoride is not needed if concentrated or powdered formula is diluted with fluoridated water. 1979 dosage schedules recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition make allowance for fluoride concentration in drinking water. It is hoped these changes will encourage the use of fluoride supplements in infants and children.
