A field experiment was conducted on loamy sand soil at Anand during summer season of 2011 to study the effect of different sowing methods and bio-fertilizers on growth and yield of pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br. Emend. Stuntz].Twelve treatment combinations consisting of three sowing methods (M₁: Direct seeding (Recommended date of sowing), M₂: Transplanting (Seeding in the nursery at the same date of treatment M₁) and M₃: Direct seeding on the date of transplanting) assigned to main plot and four bio-fertilizer levels (B₁: Control, B₂: Azotobacter + Azospirillum (AB + AS), B₃: Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria (PSB) and B₄: Azotobacter + Azospirillum + Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria (AB + AS + PSB) assigned to sub plot treatments were tried out in a Split Plot Design (SPD) with four replications. The results revealed that among sowing methods, pearl millet sowing with transplanting method produced significantly higher leaf area per plant, dry matter accumulation per plant, number of effective tillers per plant, length of earhead, test weight, grain yield, fodder yield and net profit while it produced significantly the lowest plant height at harvest and required minimum number of days to attain maturity than drilling method. In case of bio-fertilizers, seed and seedling inoculated with bio-fertilizer treatment B₄ (Azotobacter + Azospirillum + Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria) recorded significantly higher plant height, leaf area per plant, dry matter accumulation per plant, number of effective tillers per plant, length of earhead, test weight, grain yield andfodder yield as well as net profit as compared to B₁ (Control) and B₃ (PSB) treatments; however, statistically at par with treatment B₂ (AB + AS).Interaction effect of sowing methods and bio-fertilizers results revealed that sowing of pearl millet variety ‘GHB-558’ with transplanting method and seedling inoculation with bio-fertilizers (Azotobacter, Azospirillum and Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria) gave significantly higher yield and net profit than other treatments.
