Exploratory study of the withdrawal resistance of round mortise and tenon joints with steel pipe cross pins
2006
Eckelman, C.A. | Haviarova, E. | Akcay, H.
Tests were conducted to determine the withdrawal resistance of round mortise and tenon joints cross pinned with steel pipe rather than wood cross pins. Results indicated that high levels of withdrawal capacity can be obtained with pipe cross pins, provided the mortised member is reinforced to prevent cleavage. Withdrawal resistances ranged from about 4 to 6 kips for 2-inch tenons, from 7 to 13 kips for 3-inch tenons, and from 12 to 14 kips for 4-inch tenons. Tenon failure or wall crushing generally occurred before yielding of the cross pin. Withdrawal resistance was also found to be related to the location of the cross pin along the length of the tenon.
