Metabolism of alkanes by Rhodococcus erythropolis

Twenty one mutants of R. erythropolis were isolated that were unable to use tridecane and/or tetradecane as carbon sources. The mutants were grouped into four general classes based upon their alkane utilization profiles; Class I mutants were unable to grow on any alkanes. Class II mutants could grow only on alkanes of 14 carbon atoms or longer, whereas Class III mutants could grow only on alkanes of 13 carbon atoms or less. The Class IV mutants were able to grow only on alkanes containing an odd number of carbon atoms. No enzymatic defects related to alkane metabolism werre found in any of the mutants. Four of the seven Class I mutants were incapable of growth using even chain-length fatty acids. It appears that these mutants, and the three Class IV mutants, may be defective in the glyoxylate bypass across the tricarboxylic acid cycle.
