A selective reveiw of the recent literature briefly explores the effects of protein-energy and micronutrient deficiencies on immune responses. Topic areas examined include the lymphoid tissues; immune responses in instances of protein-energy malnutrition; and immune responses in cases of single nutrient deficiency (vitamins A, C, and E, folic acid, pyridoxine, iron, copper, zinc, fatty acids, cholesterol, lipoproteins). The significance of nutritional assessment and intervention in this regard also is discussed. (wz)
