Supermarket exotica
1984
Kaye, Janet
Exotic fruits and vegetables that are appearing for the first time in UK supermarkets are discussed. These include 40 varities of exotic vegetables (e.g., gherkin or courgette-like vegetables) and 31 types of fruits (e.g., mangosteen, chinese gooseberries, kiwi fruit, and sharon fruit). This trend has been due to increasing consumer awareness of the nutritional value (fiber, vitamins, minerals) offered by fresh fruit and vegetables. Consumer informaiton and services offered by home economists with respect to consumer information about foods are discussed. A table describes the appearance, principal source, seasonal availability, nutritional value, and preparation and use of various exotic fruits and vegetables. (wz)
