Relative resistance of some cowpea varieties to Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) (Coleoptera:Bruchidae)
2000
Edde, P.A. | Amatobi, C.I.
Twenty-two cowpea varieties, suitable for intercropping with cereals in the dry savanna zones of Nigeria, were assessed for their resistance to Callosobruchus maculatus attack under laboratory conditions (27-30 degrees C and 90-100% R.H.). There were significant differences between the varieties in terms of mean development period and adult emergence in the insect as well as in weight loss of cowpea. Growth indices indicated that 'Kanannado', 'IT90K-277-2', 'IT89KD-288', 'IT89KD-391' and 'IT93k-624-1' were resistant to C. maculatus attack while 'IT93K-1453-47', 'IT93K-452-1', 'IT94K-410-1', 'IT86D-719', 'IT93K-596-9-12' and 'IT89KD-374-57' were the most susceptible. Losses associated with bruchid attack ranged from 1.6 g per five grams of seeds for varieties having high bruchid growth indices to 0.8 g per five grams of seeds for the least susceptible varieties.
