Tenancy as an economic institution: the growth and distribution of agricultural tenancy in Iowa, 1850-1900
1977
Winters, D.L.
Extract: My analysis of the shifting distribution of Iowa tenancy indicates further that the institution was an integral part of an evolving, maturing agricultural system. it was not a condition imposed upon innocent farmers as a result of an inequitable federal land policy or the activities of heartless speculators and moneylenders. rather, it was a status which operators assumed--some voluntarily, some involuntarily--as they adjusted to the changing conditions of prairie farming in the nineteenth century. tenancy, in short, served a critical function in the process of agricultural--and, more broadly, economic--development.
