Sodium content in juice of 30 clones ofSaccharum cultivars from 6 to 13 months at monthly intervals were studied. Significant differences between varieties and between stages and significant interaction between varieties and stages were observed at 0.1 per cent level. Variety mean of 8 stages for sodium content ranged from 22 mg in CoC671 to 55 mg per 100ml juice in Co 62101. Varieties CoC 671, Co740, Co 7704, H50-7209, Co7508, Co 7304, Co 6806, CoA 7601, Co 6304 and NCo 310 contained comparatively lower quantity of sodium in juice than other varieties. Varieties recording high sodium content were Co 62101, B 37172, Co 617, CP 44101 and Co 853. With the increase in age of the cane, the juice sodium decreased from 45 mg at 6 months to 27mg at 22 months and later increased to 30mg per 100ml juice at 13 months. Mature juice contained lesser quantity of sodium than the immature juice. Juice sodium had significant positive association with potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulphate, chloride, ash, electrical conductivity, total nitrogen, colloids, reducing sugars and negative association with sucrose, purity and CCS percent.
