The level of knowledge about desirable food habits in preschool children were determined for rural Indian mothers. Information was developed from a prepared questionnaire completed by a random sample of 50 rural mothers. The questionnaire covered the establishment of desirable food habits, appropriate diet for the child, the development of favorable attitudes towards food, and the serving of food. It was found that, in general, most of the mothers had a moderate level of knowledge in all areas. The results inferred that there is a need to educate rural mothers on forming desirable food habits. Of 43 principles in the respective areas, 8 were known by about 60% of the mothers while not 1 of the principles was known by 100% of the mothers. There was a significant association between a mother's knowledge of establishing desirable eating habits and her educational level and the number of her children. An equal number of mothers (87.5%) consulted their mothers-in-law and doctors regarding child feeding. Most mothers of higher knowledge level also consulted their husbands. The overall implications of these findings are discussed. (wz)
