An analysis of producers' year to year changes in slaughter hog marketings

To provide a foundation for improved explanation and prediction of year to year changes in hog marketings, an analysis of survey information from individual Iowa hog producers was undertaken. questions examined were: What are characteristics of producers who do, and do not, make substantial year to year changes in hog marketings? What factors do producers who do make changes say are important in causing these changes? How is importance attached to various economic and noneconomic factors related to sizes of year to year changes? Discriminant analysis and multiple regression analysis were applied to the survey information to address these questions. discriminant results suggest that four characteristics distinguish producers who do make substantial year to year changes in hog marketings from those who do not. regression results suggest that the importance a producer attaches to expected profitability of hog production does affect the size of year to year changes in hog marketings, but that several other factors also strongly affect the size of the change.
