Dietary fibre: mechanisms of action
1987
Leeds, A.R.
A brief technical overview summarizes and discusses current knowledge concerning the mechanisms of action of dietary fiber for obesity prevention and therapy. Attention is focused on: gastric and small intestine effects concerning fiber transport, intestinal motility, and glucose absorption; activation of the ileal brake; effects on digestion and absorption of carbohydrate foods; effects on energy digestibility; effects on the release of gastrointestinal hormones; and other effects (e.g., gut pH profile changes) in the small gut. It is concluded that a number of actions of dietary fiber take place in the gut that may be relevant to obesity prevention and/or therapy.(wz)
