Fungitoxic, Physico‐Chemical and Phytotoxic Properties of Essential Oil of Seseli indicum W. & A

CHATURVEDI, R. V. | Tripāṭhī, Sureśacandra
Seeds of Cicer arietinum L. and Cajanus cajan (L.) Mill stored for twelve months exhibited the presence of 17 species of fungi amongst which Aspergillus flavus Link., A. niger Van Tiegh. and Fusarium oxysporum Schlecht. were dominant. A systematic screening of 21 essential oils against these dominant fungi revealed maximum toxicity in the oil of Seseli indicum. The oil, at 8.0 × 10² ü/1 toxic to the test fungi, also inhibited the growth of 28 other fungi. The fungistatic nature of the oil remained unaffected by temperature treatment up to 100 °C and storage up to 12 months. The oil vapours proved non‐phytotoxic to seed germination and seedling growth of C. arietinum and C. cajan.
