Medical records of 182 very-very-low-birth-weight infants (birth weight under 1 kg) who survived more than 7 hospital days were reviewed in an attempt to identify risk factors and clinical correlates of subacute mortality and nosocomial infection. The results of this study did not support elective withholding of enteral feeding from such infants. Nosocomial infection, necrotizing enterocolitis, chronic lung disease, and male sex were indicated as independent risk factors for subacute infant mortality. It was concluded that indications for parenteral feeding and for withholding the start of enteral feeding in these infants need to be evaluated by prospective studies.(wz)
