Red flags in performance appraisal
1987
Phillips, K.R.
Problems that can flaw an organization's performance appraisal system are identified. These include: the lack of establishing performance standards at the beginning of the performance period; little difference in end-of-year appraisal ratings; little change in written appraisals turned in by a manager from 1 performance period to another; inconsistencies between a manager and an employee concerning whether or when a manager-employee performance appraisal meeting was held; lack of documentation for disciplinary actions of employees by managers; and lack of positive information upon which to base promotions. Guidelines are given to recognize such flaws and correct them.(wz)
