Metabolic effects of sepsis and their relationship to malnutrition
1979
The metabolism of malnourished and chronically septic adults was studied to separate the effects of malnutrition and sepsis. Galactose metabolism, hepatic function and some fasting blood metabolites were measured in controls, malnourished adults and adults with sepsis before and after recovery. The study indicated that an abnormality of the incubation caused impaired galactose removal in malnutrition. Hepatic galactose metabolism is impaired in sepsis. Chronic sepsis has significantly different effects from acute sepsis. More research is needed to clarify these biochemical abnormalities.
