Social status and agricultural innovation: a meta-analysis
1985
Gartrell, C.D. | Gartrell, J.W.
Extract: The prediction that upper-middle class cultivators are relatively conservative (risk-aversive) in trying new agricultural technologies is tested in 34 studies. Focussing on the functional form of the status-innovation relationship, we find little support for Cancian's predicted cubic polynomial. Meta-analysis of our results indicates that curvilinear effects are very weak. Linear effects are much stronger and vary considerably across studies. These results demonstrate the utility of quantitative cumulation and provide a benchmark for future studies of the effects of status on agricultural innovation.
