Milk. Which one is best for baby?

Heslin, Jo-Ann
Factors governing the choice of how to feed a newborn are the relative merits of breast milk, formula or cow's milk, and personal feelings and lifestyle. The facts about milk are easily analyzed: breast milk has all the nutrients needed for growth in an easily digestible form; formula is designed to be as close to breast milk as possible; cow's milk has more protein and minerals (including sodium) which many doctors think is not nutritionally advantageous to infants. Breast milk is richest in fat and cholesterol, which may be helpful in stimulating the metabolism that breaks down cholesterol in later life. The mother's diet largely controls the vitamin content of breast milk. Breast milk also contains some immunizing agents which cannot be duplicated. The many varieties of formula are based on modified cow's milk, soy or meat. The modified milk-based formulas are used in the absence of allergy. Skim milk should never be used for infants. The calorie-nutrient balance is not right for babies and encourages increased intake of solids as well, which may contribute to future weight problems.
