The osmotic pressure of the nutrient solution affects the absorption of water and nutrients and, consequently, the growth and nutrition of the muskmelon seedling during its growth under greenhouse conditions. The objective of the present investigation was to evaluate the effect of several osmotic pressures and concentrations of Steiner's universal modified solution, plus three additional treatments (the fertilizer was directly applied in soil in one of them) on the growth and nutrient uptake in two hybrids seedlings of muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.): Crusier and Gold Eagle. Growth data were taken at 33 days after sowing and the uptake of nutrients was determined. The best growth and the highest nutrient uptake of the muskmelon seedlings were obtained with 0.72 atm (0.073 MPa) osmotic pressure of the nutrient solution. No significant effects in the growth and the nutrient uptake were obtained for any treatment with increasing concentrations of the nutrient solution. Seedlings growing with nutrient solutions presented higher growth as well as greater nutrient uptake compared to soil fertilized seedlings.
