Energy maintenance cost during pregnancy in healthy Swedish women

Data on the maintenance energy cost of pregnant, healthy Swedish women, anthropogenic characteristics, weight gain during pregnancy, and delivery birthweight are presented and discussed relative to energy maintenance cost recently reported for pregnant Gambian women. The calculated average cumulative increase in maintenance energy cost of pregnancy in the Swedish women was 46,500 kcal, a value far greater than that determined for pregnant Gambian women and 25-30% higher than found for Scottish women (36,000 kcal - an often cited value for well-nourished women). The differences noted across these studies infer that the maintenance energy cost of pregnancy is more variable than previously realized. (wz)
