The most important crop in the region of Caborca, Sonora, Mexico, is grape, occupying an area of 10 762 ha. The main problem in the region of Caborca is water; the average water depletion of the static level of the aquifer is 0.82 m yr(-1). In recent years, drip irrigation has been used to irrigate the vineyards; in the region there are 10 automatic agrometeorological stations. Therefore, the objective of this research was to predict the irrigation time for cv. Superior grape under drip irrigation, using the Penman-Monteith method, calculated directly by an automatic agrometeorological station ADCON as reference evapotranspiration (ETo). This research was done from 2000 to 2002 in the Experimental Station in Caborca. The three treatments were 100, 125, and 150% ETo; the experimental design was completely randomized with four replicates. The variables were water depth applied, yield, clusters per plant, average weight of 10 berries, cane length, number of latent buds per cane and pruning weight. The analysis of the results indicated that the use of 100% ETo obtained by the automatic agrometeorological station is not possible in the case of cv. Superior grape, because there was a decrease in the average weight of 10 berries, cane length, and yield. The highest water use efficiency was obtained with 125% ETo. However, to predict the irrigation time, the use of 150% ETo is recommended, as well as the coefficient values (Kc) applied in this study.
