Evaluation of toxic residue effect of Thiodan on Apis mellifera L. with regard to different application surfaces A new method for the laboratory testing of toxic effects of pesticide residues on the honeybee is described which permits to evaluate the influence of the leafsurface of different cultivated plants and other testing substrates. The newly designed device facilitates the simulation of spraying under field conditions. The leafsurface of field beans (Vicia faba L.) revealed a toxic residue effect nearly twice as high as the surface of rape (Brassica napus L.), phacelia (Phacelia tanacetifolia Benth.) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) after application of “Thiodan 35 flüssig” (a.i.: Endosulfan). The evaluation was not only based on the number of dead bees but also on the food consumption of the surviving contaminated bees. A comparison of different modes of application with defined paper as substrate showed highly significant differences with honeybees in the successive residue tests. These results should be taken into consideration in laboratory testing methods for the evaluation of honeybee toxicity of pesticides.
