Ultrastructural study of storage protein granules in fat body of the corn earworm, Heliothis zea
1991
Wang, Z. | Haunerland, N.H.
In the corn earworm, Heliothis zea, two storage proteins are sequestered by perivisceral fat body tissue shortly before pupation, arylphorin and a blue very high density lipoprotein. At the same time, multivesicular bodies and protein granules accumulate in this tissue. Electron microscopy and immunogold labelling techniques revealed that multivesicular bodies contain only arylphorin, while protein granules are generally composed of both storage proteins. However, crystalline areas of protein granules contain only arylphorin. It appears that selective proteolytic elimination of the blue very high density lipoprotein may be a prerequisite for the formation of crystalline structures in pupal fat body.
