Response surface methodology has a practical application in analyzing experimental data when the experimental responses are confounded by unrecorded, uncontrolled factors. the data analyzed were population counts from field experiments to investigate population control strategies for the beetle, Haltica sp. by nonpesticidal treatments. Confounding was caused by the unrecorded effects of the Haltica sp. environment. Population contour maps were obtained that not only described the efficacy of the control strategy but also described the Haltica sp. life cycle in its natural environment. Viable regions for future experiments were identified in order to be able to define the control mechanisms more precisely.
