In Austria sewage sludge management is in transition. By 2030 up to 85 % of the domestic sewage sludge produced shall be mono-incinerated for further recovery of phosphorus from the ashes. Current capacities cannot meet the future demand by far. Consequently, meeting the target is considered a great planning challenge. In this context, one has to consider the interdisciplinary character of sewage management. This article introduces relevant disciplines and presents the chances and challenges related to sewage sludge mono-incineration from their specific perspectives. Investigations show that mono-incineration, obviously, provides chance referring to the provision of secondary resources and energy, respectively. Challenges relate, among others, to the spatial context between decentralised sewage sludge production and centralised sewage sludge recycling or the potential loss of other valuable sewage sludge contents. An early stage involvement of all relevant stakeholders and the public shall ensure the development of broadly accepted solutions and a best possible future use of sewage sludge as a resource.
