Effective nutrition education program for medical students
1980
The need for nutrition education for medical students is being met at the University of Iowa through an applied education program during lunch, 1 hour a week for 6 weeks. Students sample therapeutic and special diets while listening to a related lecture; the sample lecture on low-sodium diets is included. A handbook accompanies the course, elucidating the content and objectives of the course and expanding the subject matter; for instance, the section on calorie-controlled diets adds information on various diet therapies, surgery, and diabetic treatment. Students are encouraged to evaluate the program and are tested on their own progress, which has resulted in doubled attendance.
