Effect of iron stores on heme iron absorption
1993
The percentage of heme iron absorption was compared in 39 subjects, using radioisotopic techniques, with serum ferritin and iron absorption of a reference dose of ferrous ascorbate. There was a good correlation between the heme iron absorption and the absorption of the reference dose (r = 0.62, p = 0.00003); and the heme iron absorption and serum ferritin (r = -0.54, p = 0.00034). These suggest that heme iron absorption is dependent on iron stores and there is a remarkable decreased of heme iron absorption in iron replete subjects. Iron absorption of the reference dose and serum ferritin present a high correlation (r = 0.66, p = 0.00001). According to these results, heme iron absorption can be estimated using the equations: natural logarithm (ln) of % heme iron absorption = 3.918 + -0.332 ln serum ferritin or = 1.154 + 0.445 ln % reference dose absorption.
