A laboratory method for studying the biology and control of pests in mushroom compost
1969
A Petri dish technique, devised by Eger (1960, 1962) for studying mycelial growth through mushroom compost and casing material, has been modified for pest investigations. The method provides a sensitive test for phytotoxic and insecticidal action of applied chemicals, and experiments are described which indicate that thionazin is a suitable insecticide for use against Heteropeza pygmaea Winnertz (Dipt. : Cecidomyiidae). Examples are also given of the use of this method in the study of the biology and population dynamics of paedogenetic Cecidomyiidae.
