Gene expression and phenotype ratios in the reciprocal sugarbeet hybrids
2001
Expression of enzyme lociIdh3 andMel controlling isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH3) and malic enzyme (ME1) was studied in reciprocal hybrids obtained by crossing of two sugarbeet genotypes. The one plant (B) was a diploid, bearing a mutationps which causes formation of a high frequency of unreduced (2n) mail gametes. The second plant (M) had normal pollen taken from a diploid variety Mezhotnenskaya-070. Differences between reciprocal progenies in the assortment of phenotypical classes and their proportion have been found. It is concluded that the main role in the emergence of the differences found is played by epigenetic variability, instability of alleles of enzyme loci brought to the zygote by the paternal gamete. This instability may be expressed as gene silencing or gene redetermination. It was hypothesized that among the factors contributing to redetermination of genes, a considerable role may be played to dose-dependent effects.
